Finally, I got a Maud Monday in today! Sorry that I was forgetful enough that Enigma had to cover me for the past couple of Mondays, but I'm here now! Let's get into it.
Today I'm gonna be talking a little bit about the Season 7 episode "Rock Solid Friendship." If you haven't seen it yet, all potential spoilers lay after the break. (It's also a slice of life episode so wutevs)
Maud Pie and Starlight Glimmer are not the most likely pair of friends, nor are they the most unlikely. I adored their dynamic in this episode; it wasn't too forced or weak, and the chemistry kind of made itself. Starlight is certainly the more expressive of the two, and Maud isn't the one who... brainwashed a whole town... but they still share commonalities that help them to bond in a way that they don't necessarily become extra close but still feel comfortable with each other regardless.
Honestly, I've grown to even feel that Pinkie being annoying helped this episode in ways. For one thing, observing Maud and Starlight's relationship gave her insight into how not only her sister but also Starlight functioned as social beings. Even if subtly, and possibly a bit of a stretch, Pinkie benefited from this episode by growing and developing better understanding about and with not only her sister but also a loose friend.
Starlight's interest in kites was both out of nowhere yet done pretty well. It doesn't break her character much at all; in fact, it adds and leads her to be more relatable and "human." Hope to see more development from her in the future that isn't about her magical ability and prowess. We established from back in Season 5 that Starlight was immensely powerful, but I'd like to see that incorporated into the plot less. I'm okay with her power as long it doesn't get too out of ha- uh, hoof, and it also doesn't either betray or adulterate her character.
And finally, Maud. This episode didn't exactly have one main or vital character, but of the three, Maud stuck out most to me and felt the most central. Here we got to see into how Maud can do with being put in a situation in order to socialize with someone not in her family nor related to the other Mane 5 besides Pinkie herself. I loved how she grew as a character here as well as Starlight; the latter of course being more experienced since she is the pupil of the Princess of Friendship itself, but Maud herself developed a lot by stepping out of her comfort zone and getting to know a total stranger. She grew not only from being accepted but also accepting the opportunity to branch out into a world she was unfamiliar with beforehand.
If anything, I'm proud of Maud and satisfied at how this turned out for her, Starlight, and Pinkie. All three of the stars of the episode grew as characters this episode and it was executed quite well.
Aaand that looks good! Sorry for the long ramble (I have a problem with wordiness at times). I understand if you went tl;dr about it. I wanted to try something else this week. Tell me what you think, not only about this review but the episode itself, too! I'd love to hear your thoughts on it as well, and also if you liked this format!
